Annabelle grew up in the palace feeling very loved by her kind mother and father.  But when she was thirteen years old, her mother grew very ill.  The palace doctor ran many tests on her blood, but it was no use.  The Queen would not live long.  As she lay in her sick-bed, the Queen told her best friend that she wanted her husband to remember her.  Now the friend should have known that we can never forget people we love!  But she was not a person, she was a fairy.  She said, "I have an idea. Make him make you a promise that he can't keep.  That will keep his mind on you!"  The Queen asked the king to promise he would only marry again if he could find someone as beautiful and kind as her.
